​​Group Legal is responsible for the provision of high-quality legal services in an efficient and cost-effective manner to the CathayGroupin all the countries in which it operates. 
 
Group Legal is seeking a high calibre lawyer to join this dynamic team. As Associate General Counsel – Commercial Contracts, you will be responsible for advising (and managing a team of lawyers to advise) on commercial and transactional matters within Cathay Group, including Asia Miles and other subsidiaries.  You will be working in a fast-changing and interesting industry and this is an excellent opportunity to build an in-house career with a leading and iconic Hong Kong company.​ 

Key Responsibilities
  • To be the trusted legal advisor to the Cathay Group who is able to provide sound and pragmatic legal advice that best meets the needs of the Group based on an understanding of the business, commercial risks and objectives, and strategy.
  • You will be responsible for (and managing a team of lawyers to) draft and negotiate a wide range of commercial contracts, including technology agreements, procurement agreements (including aircraft procurement and leasing agreements), loyalty agreements, Conditions of Carriage, spaneting agreements, and online terms and conditions.   
  • You will be responsible for instructing and working alongside external law firms on larger projects, and in relation to operations in other jurisdictions.  
  • In addition to the airline, you will be responsible for the commercial legal support of other operations of the Cathay Group, including loyalty (Asia Miles), Cathay Holidays, Cathay Cargo Terminal, Cathay Catering, and the Cathay Shop.  
  • You will be able to properly manage and know when to escalate risks to senior leaders of the Group and advise on complex negotiations and legal issues. 
  • As Associate General Counsel, you will actively encourage and support the development and growth of each of the 5 members of your team to help them achieve their full potential. 
  • To be responsible and accountable for managing and monitoring the Legal Budget (relating to commercial and transactional matters) for the Group. 
  • Support the Group General Counsel in championing and implementing various initiatives, for example related to internal control and corporate governance. 
Requirements
  • Minimum of 15 years PQE ideally qualified in Hong Kong, or otherwise in any other common law jurisdiction, with substantial commercial legal and contract law experience. Prior in-house experience would be highly preferred.
  • Able to see and understand the bigger picture to advise holistically, pragmatically, and with a risk-based approach to contract analysis
  • Excellent contract negotiation skills and experience. Highly developed influencing and conflict resolution skills.
  • Highly developed skills in managing, supervising and mentoring senior and junior lawyers within the team.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with people at all levels and work in a multi-cultural work environment.
  • Good command of both spoken and written English. Chinese language capability not essential but will be an advantage.
