Job Description:
Position: Machinist – General Manual
Reports To: Director of Operations

BASIC WORKER FUNCTION:
Sets up, adjusts, and operates any manual machine or equipment on a sophisticated, close tolerance basis. Capable of doing the most complex and difficult manual machining or jobs of the most urgent priority where speed, efficiency and low error rate, using flexibility of high-level skills, are important to the production schedule. Creates superior product with minimal supervision.

ADDITIONAL GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF
TASKS:
Sets up and adjusts machines for other workers according to specifications and tooling instructions such as feed rate, cutting speed, depth of cut, fixture and cutting tools to be used. Installs and adjusts holding device and fastens specified cutting and shaping tools in position to enable operator to produce finished workpiece to specifications. Selects and sets up speed and feed of machine to its optimum usage/efficiency according to type of operation and specified material and finish. Starts machine to obtain first-run workpiece and verify dimensional tolerances, using micrometers, vernier calipers, and templates. Changes worn cutting tools and adjusts operation of machine, such as cutting speed, feed rate, or depth of cut when required. May instruct operators on the correct operation of machines and set-up and trains workers in machine operations. Checks and adjusts controls on machines and equipment. Examine defective machinery to determine the cause of malfunction and reports needed repair to Production Lead. May operate machinery and equipment for test runs or experimental purposes. Examine parts for defects and determine conformance to specifications and blueprints. Advises Production Lead on requisitions for supplies. Keeps records as required.
Trains other workers. Serves as consultation resource with other workers. Observes all safety regulations. Other duties as required.


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to set up, operate, and adjust all machines and equipment in the machine shop on a sophisticated close-tolerance basis.
Superior machining ability combined with low error rate.
Flexibility to change jobs and/or machines as required.
Superior knowledge of machining operations and machining procedures and techniques.
Ability to instruct, train, and direct other employees in the Machine Shop.
Ability to keep current with technology necessary to perform job more effectively as technology evolves.
Sophisticated knowledge of metal properties.
Ability to read blueprints and specifications.
Ability to use various sophisticated measuring tools and devices.
Ability to grind and sharpen tools.
Ability to use shop mathematics on a complex level including trigonometry.
