Job Description:

AIP is looking for a Shift Captain (Miami Hub) to work in Miami, Florida. The Captain, under supervision of the Deputy Program Manager, is the on-site manager for the Detention Center. To join our team of outstanding professionals, apply today! 


Responsibilities

  • Serves as AGS on-site point of contact for the Supervisor Immigration Enforcement Agent and ICE contract concerns
  • Responsible for addressing concerns that may be out of compliance
  • The Captain will provide supervision, guidance and on-the-job training through the Lieutenant and ultimately to the Detention Officer to improve Detention Officer Skills, reinforcing the critical nature of the Detention Officer’s responsibilities
  • Responsible for assuring consistent delivery of service regardless of shift or location, for taking immediate action to correct problems detected and for responding whenever called upon
  • Oversight of staffing to ensure any open posts are filled with reserve or stand-by personnel and managing “call-offs” due to illness or other reasons
  • Managing the briefing of Detention Officers during post checks regarding any changes in Post Orders, or any unusual or emergency situations
  • Identify and communicate on-the-job training to correct deficiencies in Detention Officer Performance, or to strengthen and refresh Detention Officer knowledge of critical skills and issues
  • Report any emergency situation to the COTR and AGS management
  • Document incidents with complete and accurate reports
  • Oversee the review the sign-in/out sheets to ensure proper timekeeping by Detention Officers
  • Oversee the break schedules and ensuring that all Detention Officers receive breaks and proper relief
  • Provide oversight and management and direct reporting of detainee counts
  • Assist Detention Officers in dealing with any incident of disturbance or lack of cooperation from a detainee
  • Inspect every area of the facility where detainees are present, at least once per shift

Operations

  • Responsible for the operational functions and duties required in operating a detention center; including detention, processing, administration and transportation operations as required in the contract
  • Provide effective leadership and supervision of all subordinate personnel
  • Oversee the schedule and adequate staffing for all assigned posts and assure that minimum manning standards are maintained
  • Ensure duties are accomplished as directed in the contract
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Reporting

  • Furnish a manifest of all detainees under Supervisory Detention Officer’s jurisdiction and insure the safe and effective control of all detainees in the facility, 24 hours a day
  • Provides other written and oral reports as required or needed

Leadership/ Supervision

  • Inspire and motivate employees to perform duties to ensure contract compliance
  • Ensure detention officers are trained on the expectations and requirements of their duties
  • Provide timely and ongoing feedback on employee job performance
  • Motivate and provide recognition to exemplary employees
  • Discipline detention officers who are negligent or disregard standard operating procedures, policies, standards, regulations and/or contractual requirements
  • Participate in interviewing candidates for detention officer positions

Quality Assurance

  • Enforce American Correctional Association (ACA) and ICE National Detention Standards, policies, procedures and orders related to the custody, care and treatment of detainees
  • Conduct daily quality assurance inspections of their areas of responsibility; including detention facilities, grounds, posts, equipment, uniforms and knowledge of post orders, ACA and ICE National Detention Standards and current policies, procedures and regulations of all subordinate contract personnel
  • Document findings of the inspections on approved forms and checklists by the end of the shift
  • Correct discrepancies on-the-spot as appropriate
  • Responsible for the effective and efficient control, operation and security of the detention facility

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to work with a diverse population, speaking numerous languages with and from different cultures and from various countries around the world
  • Competency of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to resolve conflict
  • Decisive and able to make appropriate decisions on short notice and able respond to emergency situations
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experienced with coordinating and managing scheduling
  • Familiar with corrections operations, federal and state requirements and the treatment of detainees
  • Supervisory experience and knowledge of working with a variety of work styles
  • Incumbent must maintain physical fitness standards and proficiency with firearms and issued and other special equipment

Qualifications

  • US citizen or a person lawfully admitted into the United States for permanent residence and have resided in the U.S. for the last five years
  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent (GED)
  • Pass a criminal background and consumer credit check (no criminal record)
  • Obtain and maintain a DHS/ICE government clearance
  • Pass all pre-employment and random drug tests
  • Pass a medical examination and meet health requirements
  • At least 21 years of age
  • Possess a valid state drivers license
  • The incumbent must be trustworthy
  • The incumbent must have a minimum of one year of experience as a detention officer and two years of successful experience in field supervision (civilian law enforcement, commercial or industrial guard service, or security service supervisory position)
  • The two-year requirement may be satisfied by completion of a career development program that includes work-related experience, training, or college credits at a level of achievement equivalent to the basic requirement
  • Knowledge of day-to-day operations of a detention services center
  • Knowledge and skills in ensuring maximum level of safety and security to protect detainees, staff and facility from fire, security breaches; while ensuring operation within established facility rules
  • Ability to greet and deal tactfully with the general public 
  • Capability of following and understanding written and verbal orders, policies and regulations
  • Incumbent shall be literate and able to interpret printed rules and regulations, detailed written orders, training instructions and materials, and be able to compose written and oral reports
  • Incumbent must exercise good judgment, courage, alertness, an even temperament, and render satisfactory performance through his/her responsibilities
  • Ability to maintain poise and self control during situations that involve mental stress, such as fires, explosions, disturbances and building evacuations
  • Maintain a professional personal appearance and calm demeanor
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Possess a high degree of integrity, accountability and adhere to the American Correctional Association and DHS ICE standards
  • Demonstrate an ability to work with a diverse population of people, including people of different cultures, with different values and lifestyles; with a cross cultural perspective
  • Maintain current/physical residency in the continental United States
