The mechanical Preliminary Design engineer is an exciting opportunity to invent the future of flight developing new propulsion system architectures and technologies. The responsibilities of the role cover mechanical design activities for engines early in their design cycle. The candidate will join the Preliminary Design team within the Advanced Technology Operations section at Avio Aero.Job Description
Essential Responsibilities
As Mechanical Preliminary Design engineer in this organization, you will:
Execute the mechanical design of advanced propulsion systems and components
Create and evaluate engine cross-sections and components arrangements with inputs from a cross-functional team
Define the preliminary sizing of turbomachinery components, mechanical systems and structures configuration using different techniques (from hand calculations or complete CAD-based models)
Perform architecture feasibility studies and design exploration studies to define gas turbine engine mechanical configuration
Apply the appropriate analysis and level of detail, from physics-based engineering judgment to FEA to deliver quick turnaround solutions that can serve as baseline for more detailed studies
Integrate individual component elements into a larger system design considering the functional constrains (e.g. mechanical, electrical, thermal, aero, clearances, etc.).
Define how components are assembled as part of a system or subsystem
Roll-up component and system level weights ensuring the completeness and level of detail is adequate to the preliminary design phase
Planning and continued reporting of own tasks work to be accomplished, providing visibility on methods and results, and managing schedule for the mechanical efforts
Support internal and external customer data requests, ensuring proper documentation of all work
Qualifications/Requirements
Master’s degree in engineering from an accredited University; Aerospace preferred
Significant experience on mechanical design of gas turbine components
Experienced in creation of engine layouts, feasibility checks, and trade studies of early engine concepts at engine and/or module level
Experience with numerical methods (FEA) for analysis and preliminary sizing of turbomachinery
Understanding of whole engine architecture trades impact into final system weight and installation
Skilled in CAD modeling and product definition/configuration
Familiarity with Research and Technology development processes
Work VISA, according to local regulation, is required
Fluency in English
Desired characteristics
Familiar with various engine types and able to apply mechanical design approaches to new designs where appropriate
Experience with different gas turbine modules/disciplines
Can do attitude capable to manage uncertainty and changing environments
Experience working with cross-functional teams in a multinational environment
