Summary Perform a wide variety of visual, dimensional, and first article inspections and tests; make calculations and calibrations; ensure all prototype components and assembly configurations of company aircraft in developmental and flight stage are in conformance with prototype design by utilizing broad knowledge of product application; inspect and verify each operation in the assembly process of experimental aircraft; ensure conformance to dimension, tolerance, and hardness specifications. Assist in formulating calibration standards. Use scales, micrometers, calipers, pin gauges, thread gauges, and other measuring devices and test equipment. Work independently or with minimal direction from Supervisor. Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities Works from engineering drawings, Material Review Boards dispositions, Piper Process Specifications (PPS), Piper Material Specifications (PMS), Purchase Specifications (PS), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Regulations, Quality Assurance Manuals (QAM), various handbooks, travelers, engineering/tooling/rework orders, and written/verbal instruction. Ensure that only the latest approved applicable drawings, specifications, FAA Regulations, Quality Assurance Manual and instructions are used during inspection and testing. Use all varieties of precision measuring instruments. Perform "First Article" and “Conformity” inspections as required. Accept/reject according to specification. Examine defective parts to determine cause of defect and recommend change or modification. Monitor rework/repair. Note and report deviation from established specification and initiate required documentation to effect corrections. Determine salvageability of defective items. Use geometry, shop math, and handbook formulas to calculate dimensions, convert angular to linear dimensions and solve similar shop problems. Write report regarding inspection and test results. Interface with assigned engineering personnel, define problem and make effective recommendations to eliminate causes. Use all varieties of precision measuring instruments. Inspect and verify all prototype parts/components/tools to be used in the manufacturing of experimental aircraft and static test articles are in compliance with all FAA regulations and specifications to obtain Type certification. Ensure all prototype components and assembly configurations of company aircraft in Engineering Flight Test status are in conformance with appropriate requirements. Inspect and verify each operation in the assembly process of experimental aircraft to ensure conformance to proposed Type Design. Perform preflight inspection on experimental/prototype aircraft for proper configuration for safety and airworthiness. Perform destructive and nondestructive testing on aircraft and parts. Perform a wide variety of visual and dimensional conformity inspections and tests. Test units for fit of moving parts and mechanical functioning. Examine defective parts to determine cause of defect and recommend change or modification. Measure angular dimensions, radii, contours, clearances, thread lead, and other specifications. Test parts for hardness. Determine proper method of inspecting tools, parts or assemblies and plan gauging set-ups and appropriate measuring instruments/devices to be used to check dimensions, angles, and location of details where the design of items being inspected requires thought and planning. Devise unusual measuring or gauging setups. Maintain accurate and detailed records, files and reports of all inspections and test conducted. Recommend corrective procedures to tooling, methods or engineering departments. Scrutinize every facet of job and report improper operation, faulty equipment, defective materials, and unusual conditions to supervision. Requires the use of basic tools. Perform housekeeping chores as department requirements dictate. Serves as lead with the ability to guide and willingness to receive and share practical knowledge, train, cross-train and mentor teammates to perform necessary job functions and requirements in order to attain satisfactory levels of performance and production effectivity. Assists department leadership with gathering of data, establishing, and communicating tracking metrics to gauge team productivity and monitor process conditions. Adhere, maintain, assist and train teammates within career path to all departmental compliance requirements such as Safety, Environmental Protection, FOD and Tool Control, 5S and other assigned programs. Perform audits of areas within the department as required to maintain compliance with all FAA and Piper operational requirements. Initiate related operational process or procedural corrective action, or request additional assistance from leadership or other support teams where necessary. Other duties as assigned by Supervisor.
